Tips to Help Your Claim Go Smoothly
Your insurance company has certain obligations it must must fulfill when a claim is made. However, there are some important actions you as a policyholder can take that will facilitate the process and allow the claim to be settled much faster.
Notification – You should contact the insurance company or agent with accident details as soon as possible after the accident occurs. Provide the identity and addresses of any injured persons and any witnesses.
Assisting the insurance company – Make sure you keep copies of any accident-related material, so you can provide them to your insurance company if they need them. You may be asked to participate in physical exams and interviews under oath. You also may be required to allow your insurer access to all records (especially medical) related to the accident and a proof of loss statement (a document that has all loss details and information about the lost property).
Preserve the damaged property – It is important to preserve the damaged property in the same condition it was immediately after the accident. This allows adjusters and appraisers to make a fair and accurate assessment of damage and to calculate the appropriate cost of repair.
Auto Claims Guide
- Regardless of the circumstances, report the accident to the police.
- Record the names, addresses, phone numbers, vehicle makes and license plate numbers of all involved parties, as well as insurance agent, policy and insurance company information for the other driver(s).
- Collect the names, addresses and phone numbers of passengers and witnesses.
- Don’t talk about fault; even casual remarks can be used in court.
- Examine the damage carefully and take photos if possible.
- Make note of any injuries and behaviors of involved parties.
Property Claims Guide
- Report the loss immediately, either to a claims representative in our agency or your insurance carrier.
- Take photos of the damaged property or, if possible, keep the damaged property for an adjuster to examine.
Protect the property from further damage (e.g. weather, theft, exposure, etc).
- Promptly submit all required information and forms as requested by your insurance carrier.
